The Star Wars universe is about to grow once again as The Hollywood Reporter is reporting LucasFilm is in the early stages of developing a standalone Obi-Wan Kenobi movie.
“Oscar-nominated filmmaker Stephen Daldry is in early talks for [a solo Obi-Wan Kenobi film], which would center on the Jedi master who has been played by both Alec Guinness and Ewan McGregor,” THR reported.
Daldry previously directed Billy Elliot and The Hours.
The report indicates the talks are still very early in the process, but should Daldry agree, he’d oversee development of a script along with others at LucasFilm.
Obi-Wan last appeared in the final film of the prequel trilogy, Revenge of the Sith. McGregor played the character in the prequels, taking the mantle from Guinness, who received an Oscar nomination for his role in the original Star Wars.
If the new project goes through, it would be the third standalone film outside the new trilogy series that started in 2015 with The Force Awakens. Rogue One premiered last December and Ron Howard is directing a solo Han Solo film starring Alden Ehrenreich as the suave pilot, originally played by Harrison Ford. That film is set for release on May 25, 2018.
Before that, Star Wars blasts back into theaters this winter when The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 17.
