‘Saturday Night Live,’ ‘Westworld,’ ‘Stranger Things’ Dominate 2017 Emmy Nominations

The list of nominees for the 69th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards reads as a clash between television’s old and new.

This dichotomy is perhaps displayed looking at the two shows that garnered the most nominations (22) this year: Saturday Night Live and Westworld.  The former saw a resurgence of popularity and acclaim in its 42nd season thanks to a back to basics stream of political material and sketches that often drew the ire of President Donald Trump. The latter is a first season HBO series that reboots a (rather campy) 1970s film about a robot-inhabited theme park into a meditation onto the modern world.

Following just behind SNL and Westworld is the first season of the breakout Netflix hit Stranger Things. The 1980s-set horror series — which just officially announced the premiere date for its second season this week — was nominated for 19 Emmys.
