This 93 Year Old Woman Went Back To College And Had Stunning Results
Most college students are young adults, so at 93 years old, Amy Craton isn’t exactly what you’d expect when you think of a college student. She is, however, a great example of finishing what you started and the fact that it’s never being too late to accomplish one of your goals.
Craton pursued her degree in college many years ago, but eventually, life had other plans and forced her to halt her studies. Some of the factors included battling through a divorce and raising and supporting four children as a single parent.
Facing those responsibilities, it was necessary for Craton to pause her studies and go straight to work. While she worked and provided, her unfinished college degree simply sat in limbo.
Craton worked in a chemical plant as an administrative assistant for years, all the while maintaining her dream of eventually returning to college and finishing that degree. Little did she know that her dream might one day come true!
Many years later, in September 2014, Craton finally decided to finish her college degree. How? With the awesome power of the internet!
Craton lives in Honolulu, Hawaii and is refined to a wheelchair as well as hard of hearing, but with the help of the internet, she’s pursuing her bachelor’s degree in creative writing and English. Simply going to college isn’t good enough for Craton, she also has worked hard to hold a 4.0 GPA.
“While I was sitting here one day in front of my computer, I thought to myself, boy, I’m just wasting away my time here,” Craton told the media. “I think I’ll finally go back to college and finish that degree of mine.”
Craton did exactly that, and she’s now an online student at Southern New Hampshire University. Why did she choose that school? The name Southern New Hampshire University brought back fond memories of Craton’s summers in New England as a girl. No doubt officially starting the program brought back a flood of nostalgic memories!
Fortunately, the 93-year-old is very computer-savvy and extremely hard working. With that being said, she has taken on some standard college-student habits. “Nighttime is the best time for me to do much of my studying and writing,” Craton said. “Sometimes it will be five o’clock in the morning before I finally go to bed. It’s never boring. I’ve always got things to do for my courses, and I’m always learning something new.”
Craton’s story is a wonderful lesson for all of us in perseverance and commitment. Life will no doubt change our plans many times over, and we might end up where we never thought we would. Even with life sometimes feeling out of control, there’s always going to be a way for us to accomplish the dreams that we hold near and dear to our hearts.
We hope this heart-warming story of Amy Craton inspires you to pursue one of your dreams, and we encourage you to share it with a friend that could use some inspiration!
