As a human, we have a lot of great qualities we are capable of exhibiting. We have the ability to be empathetic to others, be kind to others and much more that make humanity so amazing. All the great stories on this site wouldn’t be possible without us having the ability to have these habits nd qualities.
But on the other side of the spectrum, we also have a lot of nasty and negative habits that we exhibit too. Whether it is jealousy, purposely being mean to others or judging someone before we know them. That last one can be especially damning as most people have a very bad habit of judging or making assumptions of someone before even knowing them.
And the group of individuals that struggle with this judgment probably more than anyone else is individuals with special needs or those who are developmentally disabled. While educating the public over the years has helped, there is still a lot of progress to be made.
And one area that still needs a ton of work in terms of treating everyone (even those with disabilities) equal is the area of employment. Many employers, jobs, and managers simply assume that people with a developmental disability cannot work, without even doing their homework.
One woman, named Ruth Thompson, noticed that this was going on and that a lot of disabled individuals were not getting a fair shake and decided she wanted to do something about it. She had a dream one night about the perfect restaurant and she knew she had to turn her dream into a reality.
She created the Hugs Cafe, which is looking to change the widespread stigma and misconceptions about special needs individuals. The restaurant, which is located in Dallas, offers cooking classes and even solid jobs for special needs workers.
She claims that the restaurant in her dream was a wonderful place where wonderful people worked together to create the best experience possible for their customers. And according to her, she has accomplished that dream with the Hugs Cafe. She says she has never had a job like this ever and even if you come in to work in a horrible and crabby mood, the team of workers there will cheer you up in no time, which is an amazing thing of course.
The restaurant itself is classified as a non-profit organization that teaches people with a variety of different special needs how to work and succeed in the food business. The opportunities are open to both individuals with mental disabilities and also ones with physical disabilities. And while the work that Ruth and her team are doing is amazing in helping to educate the public and give special needs individuals a better shot, more needs to be done. Most of these individuals go through their lives being judged and have assumptions made of them, which simply is not right.
