There is nothing like some good old family bonding. And while sitting around and spending time with each other is nice, this bonding is taken to the next level when you do something productive or constructive with your child.
Whether this is playing ball in the yard, going fishing or even building something together, spending time with your children actually doing something is a great way to strengthen the bond.
And a mother and daughter duo that know this to be true are Shannon and Shelby, who together form the craft and design team Three Crazy Cows. These DIY crafters absolutely love to transform old and ratty furniture into brilliant new pieces that are simply gorgeous.
And for people like Shannon and Shelby, you never quite know when an idea will hit you. These two were just out and about, going to some rummage sales when something immediately stuck out to them. They both noticed a fairly unremarkable dresser and immediately had an idea.
A large number of people probably walked by and noticed that dresser that day but it takes a truly creative mind to see the potential behind the dresser. And to a trained eye, a dresser is a wonderful piece to restore. They are so versatile with what you can make from them and Shannon and Shelby had an idea instantly, thanks to the waves on the drawers of the dresser.
Their plan was to create an “American flag” inspired dresser that would be as patriotic as any piece of furniture I have ever seen. After purchasing the dresser, they sanded it down and removed the hardware, and now it was ready for their work on it to begin. As you can see, it is quite plain, but you can see where they got their idea for the flag from.
Next, it was time for them to prepare to paint. Now, the American flag has a lot of details and is actually pretty precise, so a lot of planning had to go into this to make sure it was accurate. They opted to use painters tape on the dresser, to ensure that the lines were all solid on the piece. Also, the team even painted the supports so that everything would look perfect once the drawers were in too.
And while all the painting and taping took quite a while to get done and was painful at times, it was well worth it in the end. When the painting was all completed and the tape was removed, the piece was beautiful. Not only was it terrifically patriotic with its design, but it also got painted in a way that gave it a soft and rustic, with handles that blend in well.
You will also see that they decided to go with the original 1776 version of the U.S flag which is quite different from the one most people currently fly today. But perhaps the best part of this whole thing is that they didn’t even keep the dresser, as it was donated to a local veteran’s establishment.
