This Rustic DIY Wine Rack is STUNNING!
Chilly fall days are coming quickly! The days are getting shorter and the nights are getting longer. Sweaters are coming out of storage and pumpkin spice everything is back on the shelves! And, there are few better ways to spend an autumn evening than sipping on a glass of wine around the fire with your closest friends.
To really set the scene, store your bottles in this beautiful, handmade wine rack. Imgur user mpsphotography designed it and we LOVE how she repurposed an old tree stop to make a functional and useful piece of furniture.
Check out the gorgeous how-to below! The pictures barely do this piece justice, though, her work truly is beautiful!
She started with a dirty old piece of wood that had been chopped down and ended up in the firewood pile. She surmised that it’s probably birch wood, as evidenced by its light wood and striped bark. For a DIY project like this, birch is an excellent choice!
To start, she stripped off the bark, leaving the wood bare. She then cleaned off the wood to reveal its stunning color.
After that, she cut holes into the tree so that wine bottles could be stored inside. If you really want to do this as accurately as possible, you should use a compass. However, simply tracing the bottom of a wine bottle with a well-sharpened pencil will do the trick!
Once you have the outlines drawn, carefully use a chisel to carve out the wood. Be sure not to cut yourself with the sharp blade!
Make sure to space your holes pretty evenly, so that they don’t begin to run into each other as you chisel farther into the wood.
As you’re chiseling, use a wine bottle to test the depth and angle of the holes. The last thing you want is to commit lots of time and energy to the piece only to find out that the holes aren’t deep enough to hold your bottles!
Now, your wine rack is technically ready for use! But, it will look a lot better if you add some finishing touches. A little bit of extra effort goes a long way when it comes to DIY projects! Next, you’ll want to start the process of sanding and finishing the exterior of the piece. Use a piece of sandpaper (or an electric sander, if you prefer) to smooth out the holes and give them a more polished, finished look. While you have the sander out, make sure that the top and bottom of the rack are flat and able to stand upright. Finally, give the exterior of the rack a once over with the sandpaper to make sure it is smooth and won’t leave you with any splinters!
Now, start laying your wine rack with coats of stain. Choose whichever color you want. We think it looks beautiful with a dark chocolate color, but that’s really up to your personal aesthetic.
After putting on your final coats of stain, use a sealant to keep the wood looking shiny and professional.
Now, you can admire your handiwork! This DIY wine rack will bring an air of rustic naturality into your home.
Fall is coming, and you can be prepared with your very own tree stump rack. It will take a little elbow grease, but we’re sure you will love the end result!
