Rose McGowan opens up about rape case
Rose McGowan has claimed she was raped by a Hollywood executive.
The 43-year-old actress took to Twitter on Friday (14.10.16) to share her contribution to the trending hashtag “#WhyWomenDontReport”, claiming that she experienced the terrible ordeal at the hands of a “studio head”.
In a series of tweets, the ‘Charmed’ actress wrote: “a (female) criminal attorney said because I’d done a sex scene in a film I would never win against the studio head. #WhyWomenDontReport
“because it’s been an open secret in Hollywood/Media & they shamed me while adulating my rapist. #WhyWomenDontReport
“Because my ex sold our movie to my rapist for distribution #WhyWomenDontReport
“It is time for some goddamned honesty in this world. (sic)”
The hashtag was designed to create awareness as to why women don’t always report rape cases, and was originated out of the backlash received after continuing allegations of inappropriate sexual behaviour and comments made by US Presidential candidate Donald Trump.
For the ‘Scream’ actress, it isn’t the first time she’s spoken out about sexual harassment and misogyny. The star – who considers herself an activist and is often vocal about these societal issues – recently shared an article in Glamour magazine on misogyny, written by her friend and actress Amber Tamblyn.
Amber wrote: “If you’re a woman in America there’s a 10 in 10 chance you’ve experienced it–whether you recognize it or not, whether you’re ready to admit it or not. It’s a culture that talks down to you. [Misogyny] thrives in our country on a cellular level, right in front of our faces. It exists like goose bumps exist, like premonitions are felt, like earthquakes are predicted.”
