Even the rattiest and dirtiest things can sometimes have hidden potential. When most of us see a busted up old piece of furniture or item in our house, our first instinct is to throw it right in the trash.
However, an extremely creative person or one who is well versed in the art of DIY would not. These individuals see the potential greatness in things, even when it is hidden behind things like rust, holes, scratches or dents. Oftentimes, these people will just get an inkling that under all that under all the wear, something special lies.
And one team of people often gets that inkling is none other than the mother and daughter team of Vicki and Steph. These two are the two behind Mother Daughter Projects. Together, they work on a number of different DIY and home improvement projects, often restoring old and withered items and giving them new life.
So when Vicki (the mother), saw an old sewing bench on the side of the road while driving, she knew she had just spotted their next project. While sewing benches are not practical or useful for many people, Vicki saw past what the item was currently, and looked at what it could be. And thanks to her crafty mind, this sewing bench was not going to go to waste.
After picking up the bench, the mother-daughter team took a little while before they knew what ti do with it. Inspiration doesn’t always strike immediately, but when it does strike, you know. All in all, it took about a week of thought about what to do with this thing before they finally figured it out. Their idea was to create a cute and personalized hamper out of the bench.
First of all, the first thing they had to do was to clean the bench. The bench was absolutely full of years of grime and dirt and was even covered in cobwebs. After the cleaning, it was time to deconstruct the bench and figure out what parts she needed to use for the hamper. She ended up with just the hollow frame and the four legs.
Next up was to give the wood a little bit of personality. To do this, they sanded down the old wood and even used a special tool to give it a little bit of distressing. She opted to use a light grey wood stain to give the whole thing some new color. Now with the frame done, it was time to create the inside.
For the hamper, the team wanted to go with a laminated cotton fabric, that was fairly sturdy. And not only did the hamper work well, it also looked amazing as well with the cool pattern on the fabric. The hamper fits perfect under the bathroom counter, where they had been wanting to put one for a while.
The hamper not only looks amazing and fit with the decor but also serves a great function as well. This project once again proves that one person’s trash can become another person’s treasure.
