Man Rescues Tiny Animal Without Even Knowing What It Was
Most of us love animals and it pains us to see them suffer. With that being said, the prevailing wisdom in most cases is to refrain from intervening when we see a baby bird that’s fallen out of its nest or another struggling animal.
In the animal kingdom, a mother or familial group will likely refuse to accept an animal after it’s been touched by humans. That means that often times the merciful thing to do is actually ignore an animal in distress as opposed to helping it.
Sometimes, though, it’s virtually impossible to ignore and a person knows deep down that if they don’t help, the animal will likely die. That makes it a risk worth taking, and Jeff Longo recently took the risk in hopes of saving an animal’s life.
While on a stroll in St. Petersburg, Florida, Jeff encountered a struggling animal. It was small and grey, but Jeff had no idea what kind of animal it even was. Despite not knowing, he decided it was too hot of a day to leave the animal, so he took it in and nursed it back to health.
Jeff went to Reddit for help with how to raise this animal because he had little-to-no personal experience to lean on. Most people actually told him to forget about it and claimed the animal had little chance of recovering.
Instead of listening to the naysayers, Jeff decided to do some research and figure out how he could nurse this little critter back to health. He made the animal some baby bottles filled with puppy formula, and he took the animal to work with him every day to make sure it was eating.
The animal continued to grow and get bigger, and Jeff eventually discovered that it’s a flying squirrel. He named her Lady Biscuit, and she’s become a beloved part of the family. The family includes canines that have also fully accepted the squirrel, and Jeff’s only concern is that they might squish her.
Lady Biscuit loves humans as well as the big dogs that Jeff has. “She has a big cage to herself and somewhat free reign of the house when I’m present to supervise,” says Jeff.
Now that Lady Biscuit has been domesticated, there’s no way that she could return to the wild but she doesn’t seem to mind! In the wild, flying squirrels tend to live in trees, but in Jeff’s home, he’s the tree that Lady Biscuit loves to climb. “She runs around me like I’m a big tree then gets excited and jumps on things, jumps back, starts chirping, and repeats the whole process,” says Jeff.
Eventually, Jeff wants to upgrade Lady Biscuit’s cage so that she can do more of the activities that are natural to flying squirrels. He admits that he’s stuck with the little furball, and he wouldn’t have it any other way!
It seems that Jeff and Lady Biscuit are both ecstatic that Jeff intervened that day and saved her life. Maybe we should all keep our eyes out for flying squirrels we can rescue – they look like amazing pets!
