The Flower Girls At This Couple’s Wedding Are Their Adorable Grandmothers
Couples planning their weddings are getting more and more creative these days. A lot of thought is often given to what will make for a more memorable day, and some of the ideas that people come up with are really quite amazing!
Maggie and Josh Wakefield of Lancaster, Pennsylvania had an especially unique idea of their own. Most weddings don’t really have much of a role available for the bride and groom’s grandparents, but Maggie and Josh determined that their wedding would be different.
The Wakefield’s decided that they would have both of their grandmothers acting as the flower girls at the wedding ceremony. It was a summer wedding, so both grandmothers wore lovely gray lace dresses as they walked down the aisle of the outdoor ceremony.
Joyce Benedict is the grandmother of the bride, and she’s 75 years old. Drue Fitzgerald is the groom’s grandmother, and she comes in a year younger than Benedict at 74. They made for an adorable scene as they strolled down the aisle and spread rose petals.
Maggie, the bride, takes some credit for the idea as she explained, “I always knew that I really wanted to have my grandmother participate in our wedding because she’s like my second mother – she’s helped to raise me and my sister for our entire lives.” Maggie added that Josh was a huge fan of the idea from the beginning.
The couple planned a special way to ask the grandmothers. They put together a beautiful flower petal arrangement and “proposed” the idea to Benedict and Fitzgerald. The grandmothers happily accepted the offer and were thrilled at the idea of participating in the wedding as flower girls.
One downside to the idea was that Maggie couldn’t witness the grandmothers walking down the aisle since she obviously had to walk down the aisle after them. Maggie did see pictures of them afterward, though, and she commented that she “could tell they had so much fun walking down the aisle.”
Even the photographer, Ashley Gillman, commented on the unique idea, mentioning that she had “never seen anything like it” in her ten years in the wedding industry.
“I knew I was part of something really special – these two ladies are incredible women,” added Gillman. “They were both glowing and seemed to be completely honored to be part of the wedding and not simply watching it from the seats. They were beaming all day.”
The walk down the aisle was not the end of the happy scene, as the couple mentioned that all of their grandparents spent most of the reception dancing. Maggie commented that her new husband Josh even got to dance with his grandmother, which was “the sweetest thing!”
Reflecting on the day’s festivities and the activities of their grandparents, Maggie commented that she hopes one day that will be her and Josh as they dance at their grandchildren’s wedding.
What a unique idea and amazing storybook wedding!
