Dad Builds Creative Grass-Covered Cob Playhouse For His Kids To Play In During The Summer
Parents are famously known for telling their kids to go play outside. Nowadays kids need the reminder since it’s very common for kids to be indoors playing video games. Sometimes those unless video games happen to take them outside (i.e. Pokemon Go), but for the most part, kids need some motivation to go outside and play.
A DIY dad recently took it upon himself to create some incentive for his kids to go play outside. It’s common sense that kids are more likely to do something when it appeals to them, and there’s no way that the playhouse this dad built isn’t appealing to his kid.
The playhouse that he built for his son is unique and practical. Not only does it look cool enough that no kid wouldn’t want to play in it, but it’s also naturally cool so that playing outside throughout the heat of the summer is very possible.
This dad constructed the playhouse with a grass-covered roof, cob walls, and a porch supported by large branches. He claims it’s “one of the coolest spots on the property during the blistering hot summer heat.” Maybe his son won’t be the only one in it on a hot day!
Check out the pictures of this incredible cob playhouse below, and keep in mind that it can be built for as little as $30!
Living in California, this dad knew that he would have to come up with a solution to the extreme heat. He decided to go with a cob house design and use the abundance of clay that was located on their property. He allowed for two months of build time so that each step could dry, harden, and be completely safe.
The “living roof” as he calls it is made from tar, gravel, a cotton rug, and five inches of soil. It was designed and constructed with plenty of drainages for rainy days.
The interior was caulked and painted to create a space that would be cool for his son to play in both literally and figuratively. He also spread plenty of sand in front of the playhouse so that his son could play under the shaded porch as well.
The dad modeled his son’s playhouse after other cob houses such as this. Besides the cool temperature factor, the biggest appeal of these little homes is that they’re very inexpensive to build. They require few store-bought materials and simply require time and mostly natural resources.
The finished product looks like this, and it’s hard not to see the appeal in the cob playhouse when you consider the functionality and affordability. It’s hard to buy $30 worth of toys for kids these days that will keep them entertained for an extended period of time.
Not only will this be great fun for the kids, it’ll also beautifully complement a backyard space. We hope this inspires some other DIY’ers to take on a similar project!
