When it comes to finding brilliant new furniture or statement pieces for your home, there are a few different options you can try. One is to go out there and purchase something brand new. While this will get you something very cool, you will likely pay a premium for it. Another option is to purchase something old and turn it into something new, which can save you money and allow your full creativity in your new piece of furniture.
In fact, recently, many people have begun to notice that great new things can be hidden right under our nose. That old table or dresser just laying around can easily be transformed into something new. However, a lot of people don’t have the time or the necessary skills to transform an old piece of furniture, and that’s how they often end up on the side of the road or in a dump.
And while the original owners may think of these pieces as nothing but trash now, a creative DIYer can often see them as treasure. And that is exactly what happened to Argentinian blogger and crafter Marcela Pena. She came into possession of an old and ratty vanity, but instead of getting rid of it, she looked at the positives and decided that with a few adjustments, it could be just what she wanted for her room.
While the vanity had a good shape to it, the color was too dark and heavy looking and needed some other touch ups before it could be proudly displayed in her room. With a solid plan in her mind about what she wanted, she put the plan into action.
Her first step was to put a white priming coat of paint on the vanity, but next, she did something very unique. Instead of painting on her desired color, she actually used a colored wax in order to create variations of color rather than a solid coat. This gave it a very interesting look that you couldn’t get with just paint alone.
She also felt it could do with some fancy upgrades, so she added a few wooden ovals to the piece and also gave the doors a facelift. On those ovals on the door, she put a gorgeous print of a painting on each one, to add to the uniqueness of this piece. She also added some features to give the piece a more distressed look, while also still being elegant in the process.
Not only did she fix up the outside of the vanity, she also gave the inside and cabinets a makeover, while also using a past DIY project chair she had made to complete the vanity set. And after deciding to keep the original mirror (age-spots and all) her masterpiece was complete.
And what she ended up with was probably the coolest vanity we have ever seen, and a sure one of a kind. The colored wax, paired with the cool pictures on the doors to the distressing make this an extremely cool piece that is sure to be a conversation starter for years to come.
