For anyone who is not a carpenter or engineer, this might just look like crazy, nonsensical drawings. But this man had an idea and was about to get insanely creative.

His mother asked for a wine rack for Christmas, and as a loving and creative son, he decided to build his mother the most amazing wine rack ever.

“When my mom came to me asking for a wine rack my answer was always going to be yes. Being a Journeyman cabinet maker I enjoy every chance I get to be creative and make out of the ordinary pieces of furniture. My only guideline was that it needed to hold at least 8 bottles. The rest was up to me,” he explains.

“I worked on it after work when I could, maybe an hour at a time. I’d say I put about 30 hours into it. Material costs will vary but I spent about $150 (keep in mind I used a lot of offcuts from around the shop I work at so not all the materials were purchased from the store).”

Thankfully, he took photos for each step he took in creating this practical beauty. Here they are, step by step.

He drew out his idea first, as any well-trained carpenter should do. Figuring out how to build the bottle holders took some work as they are shaped a little differently.

He decided to map it out after he got the first pieces cut and then mark the places they will go. His mother’s name is Stephanie so creating a personalized “S” wine rack was just a creative touch he decided to add.

The carpenter used a CNC machine to cut the S design for the laminate and then used spray adhesive to attach the laminate sheet to the wood.

Once he attached the wood pieces around the “S” shape for stability, he painted the edges with glossy black paint.

After that step was completed, he started adding the bottle holders. It’s really coming together now and you can see how great it’s going to look when it’s finished.

Of course, his mom loved it and who wouldn’t? A personalized, homemade gift as beautiful as this is impossible to fall in love with. It’s a unique and beautiful conversation piece and looks great with her wine glasses sitting on the shelf.

Anytime this guy wants to tackle a new letter, I’d like to put my name on the waiting list.
