Move Over, Pop! Belly Slapping Is the Latest Musical Trend
When people say that the human is the original musical instrument, they usually refer to singing or clapping. Those people probably haven’t heard of belly-slapping music, though.
Matt Nickle is the talent behind this new, hilarious genre, where three performers — dressed in tuxedos, as all respected musicians are — furiously slap rhythms on flabby mens’ bodies. Beyond the fact that these guys are slapping a belly, the rhythms are intricate. They clearly put a lot of time and effort into maintaining tempo and staying in sync with each other. Nickle and his band of slap-happy musicians even showed off their skills in front of a live audience on France’s Got Talent. One of the judges was so impressed with their performance that she got up on stage to be slapped around herself.
The video below is actually the second belly-slap performance that Nickle has done. The first only featured one human drum, but it did have a cheek-slap performance. The human drum opened his mouth, changing the pitch of each slap. He must have been immune to pain, judging by the amount of work they put into their routine. In the video below, it’s a wonder that neither drum ever changes his facial expression. The slapping goes perfectly well until the human drum on the left slaps back, knocking Nickle down in the process.
