We may never understand the thinking of animals but after reading this story I think we can all agree that Manatees are amazing creatures that deserve our love and admiration.

The Tampa Police Department recently received a call about a Pit Bull that had become stuck in a Florida river.

The poor dog tried to pull itself out of the river and to safety but the ground was too soft and it kept slipping back into the water. If the dog remained in the water too long there was a very real possibility that it would drown.

Only a few feet away from the dog a manatee watched on, keeping an eye directly on the pup as it battled to leave the water.

When police arrived on the scene they immediately realized that a Manatee was floating around the dog and keeping an eye on them. The gentle animal didn’t approach too closely but seemed genuinely interested in the dog.

It’s as if the manatee was sent specifically to watch over the scared pooch and let them know that they were not alone in the water.

Here’s a great photo that shows the manatee standing just behind the dog in the water. The animal didn’t move any closer but stared at the dog for a rather long period of time as if it was concerned for its well-being.

The Tampa Police Department explained on Facebook that it definitely seemed that the manatee was watching over the scared dog, making sure that it wasn’t going to drown, and ensuring the scared dog that it wasn’t alone.

The Marine Patrol eventually arrived on the scene and was able to save the dog from a potentially fatal accident. The manatee continued to watch as the dog was picked up and carried up a later by a rescue worker.

Here’s the rescuer removing the beautiful pit bull from the water that nearly claimed its life. The pup seems to look fine considering its struggle just a few moments before.

The dog was quickly returned to its owners and the manatee, after watching the rescue, swam back into open water.

The dog wasn’t injured and will likely stay away from any fall offs near the water.

I’m not sure if the manatee was actually concerned for the dog’s safety but they are generally very friendly, inquisitive, and gentle animals, so I have no doubt that it may have been feeling a general concern for the stranded and scared dog.
