This World War II Veterans Love Notes Will Break Your Heart
Nowadays, it can be hard enough for some of us to get a text back, let alone a love letter. But a recent discovery in the drawer of one woman’s nursing home reminds us that love knows no bounds.
In WWII in the years of 1944 and 1945, a young man, Leonard Long, sent countless letters to the love of his life, his wife and son back home in the United States. The letters told war stories, the good and bad things he had to do, and also gave his beloved wife a constant reminder that he loved and missed her dearly.
Unfortunately, all three have passed away, his wife the last to go. Once she passed, the nursing home attendants were going through her belongings, only to come across the beautiful love letters.over 50 years later, their love story was able to be preserved in time by all of these letters that Leonard has sent back over the years.
The nurses were desperate to find family or friends of the beloved to reach out to and hopefully return the letters back to their rightful home. They were so desperate in fact, that they put a signal out over the news for anyone to reach out and claim the letters, should they know anything about the people they belonged to.
And luckily, they heard back.
The cousins of Leonard’s wife knew right away that the letters belonged to him. They were rightfully returned, and since they have been searching through the long scrapbook of pictures and love letters to put their love story together.
Not only do the letters offer a beautiful love story between the two, but they also offer a historic glimpse into what exactly life was like during the second world war. Through Leonard’s descriptions, he easily paints what life was like for soldiers fighting at that time.
Some of the letters are enlightening and heartwarming, as he tells comical stories about what he and his friends do to pass the time. Others are more saddening, as he discusses how he longs to be back at home with his wife and son, in their company rather than in the company of war.
Even though the three are now passed away, it only keeps the memory of them more valuable, and plays an important role in American history. Stories like theirs were popular at the time of the war, as many soldiers had to fight regardless of whether or not they wanted to, and lovers were separated against their will.
Their love is a reminder to our generation that there is more to our relationships than just sending quick texts. When we are gone, what will be left behind? Will there be letters and pictures to sift through, or are we forced to go back through our phones? Hopefully, Leonard’s story will be a reminder to all of us to cherish those we have in our lives, and to never take each other for granted.
