Launching in 1987, Star Trek: The Next Generation had big shoes to fill. The new series was the first Star Trek of any kind to not feature Kirk, Spock, or any of the other classic characters, and fans were initially very hostile towards the show.
However, a mixture of state of the art storytelling and an exceptionally talented cast led by Patrick Stewart led TNG to enormous success. The show lasted seven seasons, more than doubling the original, had four feature films, and kickstarted the golden age of Star Trek in popular culture.
