Little Yellow School Bus From 1989 Converted Into Charming Tiny Home
Nowadays almost everything is being transformed into tiny homes and it’s safe to say that the more original vehicle or building is, the more unique the tiny home turns out to be!
Converting vehicles into homes comes with its challenges. The original space of most vehicles was obviously not meant for full-time living, and most of the necessities that many of us enjoy in our homes now need to be custom-fitted for a smaller space.
If you’re Mira and Jeremy Thompson, you simply overcome these challenges. They took a long, narrow bus and transformed it into a cozy home with enough space for them both to live in.
The project began in 2011 when the couple had the idea to build a tiny home, and for a base structure, they decided to buy an old school bus. With all the clever tiny home ideas found on the internet, Jeremy and Mira thought they would try their own unique build.
This isn’t the first time that a school bus has been used as a mobile home. For many tiny home enthusiasts, the attraction to buses centers around the fact that they’re already mobile and they usually have a good amount of space to work with. The Thompson’s weren’t looking to move the home, but it still suited their purposes.
For their bus, the Thompson’s used mainly reclaimed and recycled materials, and they wisely got a lot of their interior items from antique shops and flea markets. Keep reading to see how the bus turned out!
The bus was built in 1989, but you’d never know it from how it looks today. Many people try to hide the original features altogether, but the Thompson’s left the splash of yellow at the front along with some other minor features to preserve the character of the bus.
With its dominant wood features and window box, it appears much more like a cabin these days than a bus.
Most people are immediately stunned by the exterior, but the interior is just as magnificent. It’s likely that someone walking through it wouldn’t even know that it used to be a school bus if they hadn’t seen the front end of it before entering.
The bus has a great amount of space inside and using tiny home techniques the Thompson’s were more than able to create a comfortable living environment.
It has a full kitchen as opposed to a mini model that sometimes appears in the smaller tiny homes.
One of the challenges that the Thompson’s encountered was what to do with the wheel wells on either side of the bus. They cleverly decided to hide them with a loveseat on one side and a wood-burning stove on the other. Both serve practical purposes and warm up the space nicely both literally and visually.
The Thompson’s created a lovely tiny home that’s brimming with character. Does it put you in the mind of your school bus riding days or would you love to live in something like this?
